The companies were renegotiating their partnership, and OpenAI was trying to loosen Microsoft’s grip over its AI products and computing resources. The Windsurf deal was a victim of this process, and OpenAI’s deal to acquire the startup fell apart by July. At that point, Google ended up hiring Windsurf's founders; the rest of the team was acquired by Cognition, another coding startup.
